Jungle Cruise Disneyland Park

jungle cruise disneyland california

The original Jungle Cruise opened on July 17, 1955 at Disneyland Park. Based on Disney’s award-winning True-Life Adventure films, the attraction had a more educational tone. In the early 1960s, Walt Disney introduced more drama and asked animator Marc Davis to sketch some humorous gags.

The origins of the Jungle Cruise can be traced back to the late 1940s, when Walt Disney Pictures began production on their True-Life Adventures series. Beginning with Seal Island in 1948, these somewhat staged wildlife documentaries followed various groups of animals in their natural habitats. The series was so successful with movie-goers and critics that it eventually evolved from two-reel shorts to full-length documentary films that quickly became a cornerstone of Walt Disney Studios. Disney resisted the urge to incorporate the new movie into the classic ride. That wasn’t the case with Pirates of the Caribbean, which was updated to add Johnny Depp in multiple scenes based on his portrayal of Jack Sparrow in the movie series. The ride underwent refurbishments to become more politically friendly with its depiction and diversity of characters.

Perhaps one of the biggest changes that has been made is in relation to Trader Sam. It appears Trader Sam has turned the Jungle Cruise’s lost & found area into his very own gift shop (you know Trader Sam, he’s always looking to make some money and come out ahead). We have seen a number of changes made in the queue in Disney World, so just be on the lookout for smaller changes like that on these attractions. The Jungle Cruise isn’t the first original opening day ride to receive a major upgrade this year. In late April, Disneyland unveiled a refurbished Snow White dark ride that it now calls Snow White’s Enchanted Wish. The ride is the subject of a feature film, “Disney’s Jungle Cruise,” that will open in theaters on July 30 and stream on Disney+ the same day.

According to MentalFloss.com, famous wisecracking skippers include Kevin Costner, John Lasseter, and Richard Nixon's press secretary Ron Ziegler. While these alternate versions of the Jungle Cruise were being built around the world, the Disneyland original continued to be “plussed” over the years. Throughout the 1960s and 70s, various new animals and show-scenes were added to the attraction.

Is arriving at a fast clip these days, as attractions reopen and Avengers Campus prepares for its June 4 debut at Disney California Adventure. Guests from beyond California can begin visiting the parks on June 15. Walt Disney Imagineers completed a major refurbishment on Jungle Cruise, which reopened to guests today at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California.

Learn All About Disneyland Park

Whether this story is apocryphal or not, in the early 1960s Walt brought over animator Marc Davis from the Studios to “plus up” some of Disneyland’s attractions. Jungle Cruise opened with the rest of Disneyland on July 17, 1955. However, a modern guest would be hard-pressed to recognize much of the attraction. There was no ad-libbed humor from the skippers, who played the entire experience straight. From epic adventures to captivating lands, discover the far-reaching influence of Star Wars in theme parks... The new scenes, backstory, and updated animatronics aim to create an enhanced story and guest experience.

The overlay was so successful that it was greatly expanded for 2014, and remained in both parks through 2016. For reasons unknown, Disneyland dropped The Jingle Cruise from its Holiday offerings in 2017, though the overlay remains a Magic Kingdom staple to this day. Following these mid-90s refurbishments, the Jungle Cruise continued to be one of Disney’s marquee attractions.

Just outside the Jungle Cruise entrance, look for a large palm tree. It's the oldest thing in Disneyland and dates back to the late 1800s. When Walt Disney bought the Dominguez family's land for the park, they asked him to spare it. Disney obligated and moved the 15-ton plant from the parking lot area to its current location. When the ride was in the planning stages, Walt Disney wanted to use live animals on the Jungle Cruise, but when he found out that many of them were nocturnal, Imagineers turned to mechanical ones instead. The Disney Jungle Cruise was one of the original Disneyland attractions, introduced on Opening Day, 1955.

And a character called Trader Sam is no longer seen bartering shrunken heads at the end of the ride. Instead, Sam has stepped away from a gift shop that he runs and it has been taken over by spider monkeys. That’s what park officials told invited guests at an early morning preview of the attraction on Friday, July 9. One of the first attractions Davis – who would go on to become one of the company’s most influential Imagineers – worked on was Jungle Cruise. A visual comedian by nature, Davis decided to liven up the attraction by adding the playful elephant pool and comical trapped safari sequences.

Instead playful monkeys in humorous situations have taken their place. The Jungle Cruise, like Disneyland overall, was a massive success upon its opening, quickly becoming an integral part of American pop culture. However, as the park’s first decade came to a close, Walt Disney felt his park needed some new blood. According to legend, he once overheard a child ask his mother to ride the Jungle Cruise and was aghast when the mother responded that they’d ridden it last time and didn’t need to again.

Though still a good attraction, it offers few thrills and no surprisesfor Disneyland Park veterans, many of whom can rattle off the ride’s narrationright along with the guide. For park first-timers, however, the JungleCruise continues to delight. Jungle Cruise has received some updates in recent years, so it's worth riding again if you've skipped it during your last few visits.

The Jungle Cruise takes guests on a lighthearted riverboat cruise past animatronic animals and through the rivers of Asia, Africa, and South America. The ride is filled with corny jokes from the skipper guides and remains a beloved attraction after over 60 years of operation. The skipper guides keep the journey lively by interacting with passengers and delivering a constant stream of puns and one-liners. The cruise builds to an exciting climax as the boat narrowly escapes angry natives, dangerous rapids, and a headhunter camp. After surviving the adventure, the cruise concludes back at the boathouse where guests disembark. The Jungle Cruise lasts approximately 7-10 minutes depending on the skipper’s pacing and boat traffic.

As a testament to said importance, in 2013, both American versions of the attraction were given a holiday overlay and temporarily renamed The Jingle Cruise. The Orlando version of the ride was similar to its Anaheim counterpart, though not a direct clone, and served the same purpose as the anchor attraction of the park’s Adventureland section. The Jungle Cruise’s status as one of Disney’s premier attractions was further solidified when a version of the ride opened with Walt Disney World and Magic Kingdom in 1971.
