Disneyland will also be hosting a Jungle Cruise ride and film tie-in on July 24th via livestream. The ride was inspired by Disney’s series of travel documentaries, “True Life Adventures,” and had a serious tone, according to Kim Irvine, executive creative director for Walt Disney Imagineering. The animal figures were realistic but look crude by today’s standards, she said.

The biggest changes up to that point came in 1994, when the attraction was rerouted and shortened to make room for the then-upcoming Indiana Jones Adventure attraction. In addition, the ride (and the entirety of Adventureland) were rethemed to be set in the 1930s to tie into Indy. Ahead of its official reopening on July 16th, we were invited to a media preview of the newly updated ride today in Disneyland. In the scene with the rhino and the people trying to escape to higher ground, you’ll now find some of the new characters that are part of the Jungle Cruise’s updated storyline. On the ride, you’ll still find many of the classic scenes (and jokes) you know and love.

Jungle Cruise is one of the original opening day attractions from Disneyland’s opening on July 17, 1955. As we previously reported here at MickeyBlog, Disney Imagineers have created an incredible new backstory for the ride. You never know what comedic characters, safari adventurers and tour guides you will meet on their journey through the jungle.

The ride is family-friendly with no height restrictions, though some scenes may be frightening for very young children. The combination of the skipper’s humor, classic animatronics, and immersive theming make it an enduring Disneyland favorite. Disney Jungle Cruise is one of only three Disneyland attractions where a cast member rides with you (the others are Storyland Canal Boats and Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes). This was due partially to the cold French climate not being hospitable to water rides and partially because there were several knockoff Jungle Cruises already built at various French amusement parks. As Imagineers, it is our responsibility to ensure experiences we create and stories we share reflect the voices and perspectives of the world around us. With Jungle Cruise, we’re bringing to life more of what people love – the humor and wit of our incredible skippers — while making needed updates.
What You Need to Know About the Jungle Cruise Ride at Disneyland California
Altered scenes include a safari being chased up a pole by a rhino. In the 1960s, Disney decided park-goers wanted a more humorous experience. The Jungle Cruise was one of Disneyland’s original attractions overseen by Walt Disney when the park opened on July 17, 1955. Ken Potrock, president of the resort, said that fans can expect “all the heart, all the humor and some new humor” on the 6-8 minute ride. The jokes are no better in California, and the only major difference is that the Anaheim ride doesn't have a cave section. As part of these announcements, Disney made it clear that these changes to the attraction were not going to be related to the upcoming film based on the attraction.
Check out the video below to see the Imagineers discussing some of the changes that have been made to the ride. You never know what kind of corny jokes or hidden references you’ll find (peep the giraffe on the sign to the left). As you make your way into the Jungle Cruise queue, you’ll find a number of cool details all throughout the line. The official Disney fan club, D23, is celebrating its 15-year anniversary with special 2024 events... The animatronic animals were cutting-edge for the time period, bringing added realism to the scenes. The refreshed ride will spotlight the adventures of Alberta Falls, the owner of the Jungle Navigation Company and the "granddaughter of world-renowned Dr. Albert Falls," the company's former proprietor. And look for Trader Sam, one of the journey's iconic characters, to helm the newly reimagined Lost & Found location, too. Since it opened in Disneyland Park in July of 1955, Jungle Cruise has become one of the most iconic attractions in Disney’s theme park catalogue. The Jungle Cruise is a classic boat ride located in Adventureland at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California. Opened in 1955, it was one of the original attractions when the park first opened.

Its rich history, captivating design, and clever architecture create an environment that fully transports visitors to a world of laughter and exploration. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or the hundredth, the Jungle Cruise remains a must-see attraction, promising a delightful journey through exotic lands and the perfect opportunity to make cherished memories. As more technologically advanced attractions have been added to thepark over the years, the Jungle Cruise has, by comparison, lost some of itsluster.
However, despite its beloved stature, the attraction has met its fair share of controversy over the years, which has led to numerous changes, including a major refurbishment in 2021. Disney has made some major updates in an effort to manage line skipping. Check out Trader Sam’s Gift Shop, which replaced the Trader Sam animatronic with the shrunken heads.
This opened up the opportunity to improve several other areas of the adventures as well. Skippers work off a script that gives them the opportunity to switch up their lines and wisecracks. New lines advancing the plot and referring to Alberta have been added to the script.
On three trial rides, the skippers didn’t mention Alberta, but Irvine said they only recently were given the new scripts. It involves Alberta Falls, boss of the steamers, and five of her friends who have gathered from around the world to ride on her boats. The park previewed the attraction before the park opened and then let regular visitors board the attraction. It has been closed for the revamp and will officially reopen on July 16. If you can't get enough of those wise-cracking skippers, check out Skipper Show, which features stand-up comedy from a group of former cast members.
The queue also includes Easter eggs that set up Alberta’s five friends and well as tease a new feature film based on the ride. Although the plot revolves around Alberta Falls, described as a woman of color, the character is not seen on the attraction. Instead, guests will learn about her from her office, which they pass on the ride’s queue, and through the narration of the skippers. The ride was envisioned as a trip aboard a tramp steamer along rivers of Asia, Africa and South America, with scenes of comically menacing wildlife along the way. But a big part of the show has been the wisecracking skippers who narrate the journey. "Weird Al" Yankovic wrote and recorded a song titled "Skipper Dan" about a failed actor who ended up as a guide on the Jungle Cruise, but sometimes those skippers often go on to bigger things.
